Dr. Megan Winton

Senior Scientist

Megan grew up near the coast of Florida, USA, where she developed an early love for the ocean and a particular fascination with sharks. She has spent the past fifteen years researching sharks and their relatives on both coasts of the United States. At AWSC, Megan is leading efforts to study the recovering white shark population in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean. Her research uses a combination of cutting-edge technologies and the development of novel statistical approaches to study the movements, behavior, and impacts of human activities on white sharks in the waters off Cape Cod and beyond. As part of her PhD research, she led an intensive mark-recapture survey to estimate the number of white sharks visiting the waters off Cape Cod, which represents the first estimate of white shark abundance ever produced for this population. Through her work on white sharks, Megan has become increasingly interested in the human dimensions of wildlife management and decision making.
